Caring for your Banneton Baskets

Maintaining the Magic: Essential Care Tips for your Banneton Baskets

Before the first use: It's recommended to season your Banneton basket to prevent dough from sticking. This involves gently brushing the surface of the basket using the bamboo brush. Using a spray bottle, very lightly (you don't want to wet the baskets too much) with a small amount of water. Dust the baskets generously with flour, covering every crevice. You can use rice flour or a mixture of rice flour and all-purpose flour for best results. Allow the basket to sit a few minutes to let the flour set. Ensure the basket is completely dry before storing in a dry place.

Regular Cleaning: After each use, shake out any excess flour from the basket. Use the bamboo brush to gently remove any remaining flour. Never use soap or detergent, as it can absorb into the basket and affect the flavor of your bread.

Air Drying: Allow the Banneton basket to air dry completely after cleaning. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can cause the wood to warp or crack.

Storage: Store your Banneton basket in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid stacking other items on top of it, as this can deform its shape.

Re-seasoning: If you notice dough starting to stick to the basket after several uses, it may be time to re-season it. Simply repeat the seasoning process by dusting it with flour before each use.

Rotate Usage: To prolong the life of your Banneton basket, consider rotating between the oval and round baskets if you bake frequently. This allows each basket to fully dry out between uses and prevents mold growth.

Inspect Regularly: Periodically inspect your Banneton basket for any signs of mold or mildew. If you notice any, clean the basket thoroughly with a mixture of water and white vinegar, then allow it to dry completely before using it again.
